Dampier Strait, which separates the Bird’s Head Peninsula from Waigeo and Mansuar, derives its name from the Dutch colonial era, inspired by the peninsula’s shape on the map. Here, the convergence of the Pacific Ocean and the Halmahera Sea creates a thriving underwater ecosystem, fueled by strong currents that attract large pelagic species.
